I’m back again and being dedicated to this weekly meme! Let’s just jump straight into it because I’m about to head out to my mum’s work and sit by the pool all day. Hopefully I can get a tan. If not, hopefully no children trip over me.
I also apologise for not posting too much this week. I’ve been a bit busy with university work and life so posting has been a tad tough
So, what’s it about?
First Lines Fridays is a weekly — obviously — feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words where we dare to ask: What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author, or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines? It is a meme that allows us to explore the world of fiction.
I myself judge books by their author, cover, and notoriety. So, seeing people do this challenge for months has had me pick up some pretty amazing books.
How it works?
- Pick a book off your shelf (it could be a current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page.
- Copy the first few lines, but don’t provide any other details about the book just yet — let’s see if it hooks the reader in!
- Finally…reveal the book!
I felt her before I heard her screams.
Her nightmare pulsed into me, shaking me out of my own dream, which had something to do with a beach and some hot guy rubbing suntan lotion on me. Images – hers, not mine – tumbled through my mind: fire and blood, the smell of smoke, the twisted metal of a car. The pictures wrapped around me, suffocating me, until some rational part of me reminded me this wasn’t my dream.
The book is Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead.
Trigger Warnings: self-harm
My Rating: ★★★★★
Genre: young adult, romance, urban fantasy
ONLY A TRUE BEST FRIEND CAN PROTECT YOU FROM YOUR IMMORTAL ENEMIES…
Lissa Dragomir is a Moroi princess: a mortal vampire with a rare gift for harnessing the earth’s magic. She must be protected at all times from Strigoi; the fiercest vampires—the ones who never die. The powerful blend of human and vampire blood that flows through Rose Hathaway, Lissa’s best friend, makes her a dhampir. Rose is dedicated to a dangerous life of protecting Lissa from the Strigoi, who are hell-bent on making Lissa one of them.
After two years of freedom, Rose and Lissa are caught and dragged back to St. Vladimir’s Academy, a school for vampire royalty and their guardians-to-be, hidden in the deep forests of Montana. But inside the iron gates, life is even more fraught with danger…and the Strigoi are always close by.
Rose and Lissa must navigate their dangerous world, confront the temptations of forbidden love, and never once let their guard down, lest the evil undead make Lissa one of them forever…
Vampire Academy is a hardcore guilty pleasure series for me. I read it when I was quite young (13, so 7 years ago) and absolutely fell in love with everything about the world. Looking back, there are definitely some problems with this series, especially the romance (ick) and flaws with the execution. However, it is ten years old and the quality of books has only improved over that time.
This doesn’t mean that Vampire Academy isn’t still one of my favourites because it is. I love this series so much and it was one of the first books I ever read after my Twilight phase took over. Exciting stuff. I would recommend it, but I would even more so recommend going into it for a laugh instead of expecting the most amazing and brilliant book ever.
Happy reading this weekend!
